Blue Tier Trail and Atlas?

Blue Tier Descent + Atlas: The Combined Experience

If you’re up for a full adventure day, many riders combine the Blue Tier Descent and Atlas Trail in one outing to get the full “Blue Derby Wilderness Ride” experience.

What this looks like

  • Start high (Blue Tier plateau) via shuttle or vehicle. Descend the Blue Tier Descent (including the “Big Chook” section if you like flow jumps/berms) through high‑level terrain, forest, granite slabs. Tracks Less Travelled+1

  • Stop halfway at Weldborough Hotel for a break, lunch or a cold drink (the atmosphere of this old country pub adds local colour). Tracks Less Travelled+1

  • Then shuttle back up (or continue) to the start of Atlas, and ride Atlas Trail through the boulder‑garden forest, descending toward Derby or another link trail.

  • Finish the day riding another lower trail (if time permits) or link back to accommodation.

Why do both?

  • It maximises the variety: From high‑plateau alpine terrain to dense rainforest, from flow berms to rock gardens.

  • One big descent day: You’re descending large vertical metre totals (some reports quote over 1 200 m descent in the combined ride). Tracks Less Travelled

  • It anchors your time in this region: Using both takes you deep into what makes Blue Derby/Blu Tier region special.

  • Great photo/opportunity points: The combination of terrain, forest, geology, history (mining relics) makes for memorable ride stories.

Considerations

  • Skill level: Because both trails are technical, you need to be confident on technical terrain. If you’re new to these kinds of trails, pick sections or ride with a guide.

  • Fitness: While it’s mostly descent, there are climbs (especially Blue Tier) and you’ll be in the saddle for multiple hours.

  • Time: Allow a full day (including shuttles, breaks, travel) if you plan to do both.

  • Weather: Conditions can change fast. On the plateau it can be cold and windy; down in the forest it may be wetter/slippery; ensure you have appropriate gear.

  • Bike & maintenance: Rock gardens punish equipment. Check your bike pre‑ride (tyres, brakes, suspension) and carry tools/spares.

  • Logistics: Shuttle bookings (if required), vehicles parked at end, accommodation etc.
